Archie 1.62!
>>> The differences between 1.60 and 1.62:
• Made Archie compatible with *either* LaunchRRH or LaunchSS files. It
first searches for LaunchRRH. If it doesn't find it, Archie looks for
LaunchSS.
• Added code to the file search routines so that if you have a bad path
and file name for one of your file sections, Archie no longer bombs --
it shows you the error and continues with the rest of its display.
• Rewrote Command 95 -- list most recent callers -- so it works now. You
need to specify the location and name of the CallerLog in the menu
option field.
• Retitled two STR resources -- Host/Second Sight Name and Archie Menu
-- eliminating request for a path. Putting a pathname into these strings
made for strange behavior under MultiFinder.
>>> The differences between 1.59 and 1.60:
• Altered code to try to make Archie work under MultiFinder. I’d
appreciate feedback on whether or not I succeeded.
• Expanded "String not found" message to try to trap bug which sometimes
appears when Archie tries to read a STR resource. If you notice Archie
flashing a "No string available for STR " message, please copy the full
content of the message and let me know.
• Modified BBS Activity report to show CrashMail event count and to
eliminate "other errors" count, which was confusing since no one (not even
I) was sure what those errors were.
>>> The differences between 1.58 and 1.59:
• Added Command 132, which is exactly like Command 131, but saves the
older entries (prior to the current date) in an .arch textfile.
• Added Command 133, which clears the UserLog of all “Combined message
section” choices.
>>> The differences between 1.57 and 1.58:
• Added Command 131, which clears a file such as the Tabby Log (for
which it was designed) of all entries which don’t contain the current
date.
• Adjusted the SIZE resource and added more CODE segments to try to
reduce Archie memory requirements.
• Fixed some small bugs.
>>> The differences between 1.56 and 1.57:
• I added Command 130, which resets the text file specified in Optional
information to a length of zero. This command was prompted by the Tabby
Log file, which quickly grows so long that I have trouble reading it.
>>> The differences between 1.55 and 1.56:
• Added display and editing of Host 2.0 restriction flags to most Archie
UserLog commands and also enabled Archie to globally set and clear these
flags in the entire UserLog via a new command, 129.
• Found and fixed a bug which led previous versions of Archie to misread
restriction flags.
• Added a new from-the-menubar command: “Hang up without update.” This
command destroys the LaunchRRH file and returns control to Host without
updating your stats. It’s the same as Command 101.
• Added a new from-the-menubar command: “Chat,” so you can annoy—I mean
talk with—callers while they’re in Archie. I’m a burst-speed typist, and
sometimes the Chat mode doesn’t keep up with me. If you’re missing
characters, type slowly while in Chat. To end the Chat, reselect the
menu item.
• Fancied up the CallerLog Report (now called BBS Activity, so you can
use it as a caller information command): added display of remaining disk
space and recent callers.
>>> The differences between 1.54 and 1.55:
• I altered Archie’s commands 87 and 88 (Global New File Display) so
they give the caller the option of seeing new files since the last call,
or files uploaded during a selectable time period. Thanks to Ray Terry
for the suggestion. The “new since last call” option doesn’t use hours,
minutes and seconds in its calculation, so it may show some already-seen
files under some calling conditions, but never more than a day’s worth.
• In my quest to replace Scott Watson’s UserEdit utility, I added
command 128, which lets you clear the UserLog SYSTEMx.MSG read flags
remotely, so you can easily display new sets of system messages without
going into UserEdit. This command is optionally password protected, just
like the UserLog viewing commands (if you put a word in the Optional
Info field of the menu, this word is used as a password). While I was
adding password protection, I added the same feature to the UserLog
backup command.
>>> The differences between 1.52 and 1.54:
• Archie is compatible with the altered UserLog format introduced with
Host 2.0b12.
• Archie will now run in a stand-alone mode—without a LaunchRRH file in
its environment—if you hold down the mouse key when launching Archie.
(This technique is different from a no-longer-applicable kludge I put
into Archie 1.53 requiring a file called “Archie Run”.) Archie still
requires the standard Host amenities—Config file and UserLog—in order to
operate, but if the mouse key is depressed, Archie uses the first name
in the UserLog as an assumed ID and proceeds as if you had connected
locally through Host before launching Archie. This feature makes it
easier to install and debug Archie, and enables you to use Archie for
certain quick & dirty maintenance operations for which it is well-suited
without having to log onto Host.
• Archie now has another option for the Multiple Default Menus feature:
If a menu used to launch Archie contains a semicolon, Archie uses the
menu name *after* the first semicolon as its default menu, substituting
colons for every semicolon after the first one. This allows you to put
Archie default menus into folders, to clean up your main desktop. Here’s
an example:
If you launch Archie from a menu called
Sysop powers;HD;ArchMenus;Sysop
Archie stores the name after the first semicolon and substitutes colons
for the remaining semicolons, then uses that menu as its startup menu.
In this case, Archie would start up with a menu called Sysop in a folder
called ArchMenus on a volume called HD (HD:ArchMenus:Sysop is the path).
Keep your volume, folder and file names short for maximum flexibility.
You can also use “partial paths” to save a bit of space: if Archie is
running on the HD: volume, you could launch the above example from a
menu called Sysop powers;;ArchMenus;Sysop. That would translate into
:ArchMenus:Sysop, which would have the same effect.
Apart from these specific additions, I also fixed a small bug which
affected the accuracy of the CallerLog report if a caller requested it
more than once during a single Archie session.

I’ve included a copy of this note in the Archie Stuffit archive for
distribution.
